B&M Warns of Profit Decline Amid Weak UK Sales; CEO Tjeerd Jegen Unveils Turnaround Plan

Discount store B&M has made a profits warning with poor UK sales and tough economic conditions blamed. New chief executive Tjeerd Jegen, who joined in June 2025, has launched a strategic turnaround plan to reinvigorate the business’s performance.

Financial Performance and Market Challenges

B&M’s core annual profit rose modestly by 0.6% to £620 million in the fiscal year to March 29, 2025, just ahead of the prior year’s £616 million. Nonetheless, the UK business of the company saw 3.1% like-for-like sales decline largely because of less consumer spending on fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) like food and home products. This decline is a reflection of wider economic pressures in the form of inflation and stagnating real wages that have affected discretionary expenditure of B&M’s core lower-income consumer base

Strategic Response by CEO Tjeerd Jegen

To address these difficulties, CEO Tjeerd Jegen has set out a turnaround strategy with a complete focus on value improvement for customers and better operational efficiency. Some of the main features of the plan are:

Price Cuts: Introducing focussed price reductions to appeal to thrifty consumers and drive demand.

Product Range Optimization: Streamlining product ranges to suit customer tastes and market trends better.

Operational Streamlining: Refining supply chain and inventory management to lower expenses and enhance product availability.

Customer Engagement Initiatives: Introducing loyalty programs and targeted marketing initiatives to enhance customer retention and brand loyalty.

Market Outlook and Investor Sentiment

Despite the strategic initiatives, investor sentiment remains cautious. B&M’s shares have experienced volatility, reflecting concerns over the company’s ability to navigate the current retail landscape. The broader UK retail sector faces similar challenges, with declining consumer confidence and increased operational costs affecting profitability across the industry.

B&M’s assertive strategy under the helm of CEO Tjeerd Jegen is designed to overcome the short-term issues created by poor UK sales and economic volatility. Although the success of the turnaround will become clear in subsequent quarters, the determination of the company to serve customers and shareholders better is unwavering.
