Nigel Cann Appointed CEO of Sizewell C as Project Enters Crucial Construction Phase

The UK’s most prestigious nuclear power development, Sizewell C, has now revealed that Nigel Cann has been appointed as the outgoing Chief Executive Officer, a development that signals a major change in leadership amid critical stages of development. The development takes effect from January 1, 2026, succeeding Julia Pyke, who has managed the entity throughout the development phases.

The announcement is taking place as Sizewell C is on the brink of embarking on the major construction stage of the project, which is one of the most complicated infrastructure projects taking place within the UK. The energy plant is set to take a pivotal role in ensuring that the UK’s energy security is improved. The power plant is situated on the coast of Suffolk.

Nigel Cann has considerable experience in delivering large infrastructure projects, with several decades of experience working on large-scale engineering, energy, and construction projects. He is currently the Chief Executive of Balfour Beatty’s UK Construction Services, where he has managed some of the most complicated transport, defense, and energy projects in the UK. It is evident that his background is highly suited to the requirements of the next stage of Sizewell C, which will need tight control, supply chain, and labor scalability.

Commenting on the matter, Sizewell C’s Chair, Sir Roger Carr, said that Cann is a leader who has a “strong track record of delivering nationally significant projects safely, efficiently, and at scale,” adding that his skills would be invaluable to the project as it moves from the planning stages to implementation, which is fraught with high risk but also huge economic potential.

The outgoing CEO, Julia Pyke, has agreed to stay on until the end of 2025 to facilitate a smooth transition. Julia Pyke has been a vital force in the regulatory approval of the Sizewell C project, gaining support from the government, as well as winning the support of local communities. It is under her leadership that many critical milestones, such as completion of the project’s financing plan, have been accomplished.

Looking back on her time with the project, Pyke stated that she is “immensely proud of what has been achieved” and is pleased that the project is “poised to enter the construction phase.” In a comment on the appointment, Pyke said, “Nigel’s appointment ensures continuity and strength as Sizewell C embarks on the next chapter.”

Cann stated that he is “honoured” to be taking on the role as CEO of Sizewell C, as he believes that the project has national significance. “Sizewell C is an essential part of the UK’s future energy resilience, economic development, and decarbonisation strategy,” he said.

After completion, Sizewell C is projected to produce enough electricity to support the powering of six million homes, apart from job creation in the construction stage, which includes support for tens of thousands of people. The initiative is also considered a pivotal element of the government’s overall nuclear policy, which is geared at minimization of reliance on fossil fuel energy.

This has been well received within the industry, who believe that Cann’s skills in construction is a positive indication that the industry is on the verge of a delivery-focused era.
Industry players within the nuclear sector have also regularly stated how essential stable leadership can be within the success of such massive projects. The UK is experiencing growing energy demand, as well as geopolitical uncertainty, making it essential that Sizewell C’s development is closely followed by policymakers, market participants, as well as the community at large. The degree to which Nigel Cann’s vision helps the project live up to ambitious schedules, cost, and goals remains a pivotal step.
