Former Sunak Chief of Staff Liam Booth-Smith Joins AI Firm Anthropic After No 10 Encounter

Tory Peer Takes New Role in AI Industry

Liam Booth-Smith, a Conservative peer and former chief of staff to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, has accepted a role as head of external affairs at artificial intelligence company Anthropic. This marks a notable move from politics to the fast-growing AI sector.

Booth-Smith, who joined the House of Lords last year, first came across Anthropic during his time at No 10 Downing Street. The company was part of a government meeting on AI hosted by Sunak in May 2023, where Booth-Smith attended as an observer.

Anthropic’s Growing Ties to UK Government

Anthropic recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the UK government to collaborate on AI initiatives. This partnership aligns with Sunak’s vision during his premiership for the UK to take a leading role in developing and regulating artificial intelligence technologies.

Booth-Smith’s new position at Anthropic comes as the company expands its government relations and external affairs efforts.

Ethics and Restrictions on Lobbying

The Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (Acoba) reviewed Booth-Smith’s move to Anthropic and stipulated that he must not engage in lobbying activities on behalf of the firm for two years following his departure from government service.

Anthropic has confirmed to Acoba that Booth-Smith’s responsibilities will comply with these rules, and he will not be involved in any lobbying efforts.

What This Means for the AI Landscape

Booth-Smith’s transition highlights the increasing intersection between government and AI industry leaders as the UK seeks to balance innovation with regulation. His experience inside No 10 gives him insight into government priorities and policymaking around emerging technologies.

As AI continues to shape many sectors, having experienced figures like Booth-Smith in key industry roles could influence how companies and governments collaborate going forward.
