giffgaff Appoints Kate Dohaney as New CEO to Drive Growth and Broadband Expansion in UK Telecoms

UK telecoms group Virgin Media O2 announced that Kate Dohaney has been named the new Chief Executive Officer of its subsidiary giffgaff, effective early December 2025. She will replace Ash Schofield, who has led the company since 2018. This move reflects giffgaff’s ambition to evolve from a mobile-centric, community-driven brand into a converged telecom provider with a national presence in broadband.

giffgaff has long been recognized for its unique mobile-only model, using community engagement to offer low-cost, flexible mobile services. The business will now move into the fixed broadband market, with plans to provide full-fibre internet, utilizing VMO2’s extensive infrastructure. This is a strategic expansion where giffgaff hopes to compete in this converged telecom environment, wherein one provider offers customers both mobile and home broadband services.

Kate Dohaney will join giffgaff with a strong track record in technology, media, and business transformation. She was most recently the chief executive of Orb Group, leading its digital transformation and securing multi-million-dollar investments, resulting in substantial growth in shareholder value. Dohaney previously held senior leadership positions within News Corp and Dow Jones. Her appointment signals giffgaff’s intent to leverage her expertise in scaling operations, integrating technology, and driving brand growth across a competitive market landscape.

Lutz Schüler, chief executive at Virgin Media O2, commented on the appointment:

“Kate is a proven leader with a wealth of experience, and I look forward to welcoming her as CEO of giffgaff. She joins at a truly exciting time for the company following its expansion into broadband, and I am confident she will lead the organisation with the heart and tenacity the brand was built on.”

Dohaney said of her new role:

“Being appointed to lead giffgaff is a real privilege. The brand is known for doing things differently, and I am excited to drive the next chapter of growth, building on its unique culture and expanding services for customers across the UK.”

The challenges are apparent: the operational execution will have to be strong to integrate fixed-line broadband operations with the mobile-first identity of giffgaff, ensuring network rollout efficiency and service delivery excellence. Besides, giffgaff needs to ensure its community-driven ethos remains alive as it scales into the capital-intensive broadband industry. Competition is fierce, with other UK providers increasingly offering converged services combining mobile, broadband, and even TV packages, placing pressure on margins and customer retention.

While this comes with challenges, the opportunities are not inconsiderable. Full-fibre broadband rolls out across multiple regions, such as the North West, Yorkshire, East Midlands, North East, Scotland, South West England, Wales, and the West Midlands, with increased demand for high-speed home internet which giffgaff is perfectly positioned to capitalize on. By using the network scale of VMO2, giffgaff can grow fast while retaining a lean, customer-focused brand experience. There is also further potential for synergies with VMO2’s broader portfolio, including marketing integration, product innovation, and bundling for competitiveness.

For the UK telecoms sector, this appointment underlines the rising significance of convergence and infrastructure investment. This shift places giffgaff among full-service telecom players, reflecting broader market trends in which scale, network capability, and service diversification will be key to growth and profitability. Investors and analysts will be watching closely to see how quickly the company can roll out broadband nationwide, attract new customers, and preserve its base while remaining true to the distinctive identity of the brand.

In all, Kate Dohaney’s appointment as CEO marks a pivotal moment for giffgaff. With the robust infrastructure and resources of Virgin Media O2 behind it, the brand now has the opportunity to make a fundamental transition: from being a niche mobile provider to a mainstream converged telecom operator. Strategic execution, customer-centric innovation, and a balance of growth ambitions with core brand community values will be key to success. The next few months will prove pivotal in setting the course, with Dohaney’s leadership at the core of how well the company will navigate this ambitious evolution.
