UK–US Peace Talks on Ukraine Downgraded Amid Kyiv’s Rejection of Crimea Proposal
A planned high-level peace summit in London aimed at resolving the ongoing Ukraine conflict has been significantly downgraded. Both UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio have withdrawn from attending, following Ukraine’s firm rejection of a US proposal to recognize Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea.
Ukrainian Rejection of Crimea Proposal
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has unequivocally stated that Ukraine will not accept any peace agreement that involves ceding territory, including Crimea, to Russia. He emphasized that Ukraine’s sovereignty is non-negotiable and that any discussions must include Ukrainian participation.
Shift in Diplomatic Engagement
In light of Ukraine’s stance, the upcoming summit will now be attended by US Special Envoy Keith Kellogg, French and German officials, and Ukrainian representatives. The absence of Lammy and Rubio reflects the strain in UK–US relations over the handling of the peace process.
Ongoing Military Actions
Despite calls for a ceasefire, Russian military activities continue in eastern Ukraine, including missile strikes in Odesa and Zaporizhzhia. These actions have led to civilian casualties and underscore the challenges in achieving a lasting peace agreement.
The diplomatic landscape remains fluid, with ongoing discussions among European allies and the US to formulate a strategy that respects Ukraine’s territorial integrity while seeking a resolution to the conflict.
